COLLABORATION

Utility reimagined through luxury outerwear

What happens when three very different areas of expertise are brought together around one creative idea?

In 2012, Christopher RÆBURN began a two-season partnership with Moncler — one of the world’s most influential outerwear brands — bringing the functional intelligence of military and utility design into a very different luxury context.

The collaboration became Moncler R, combining RÆBURN’s extensive military archive, material research and systems-led approach to outerwear with Moncler’s expertise in performance, manufacturing and technical product.

It was an unexpectedly natural meeting of disciplines: military utility, contemporary design and luxury performance.

THE FIRST COLLECTION

For Autumn/Winter 2012, RÆBURN developed a 20-piece collection spanning coats, trousers and accessories.

The starting point was function.

Christopher drew extensively from his military and utility archive, studying construction, layering systems, protection and purposeful detailing before translating those ideas through Moncler’s established outerwear language.

Italian Military fabrics were combined with technical wool and dense cotton, while familiar Moncler silhouettes were reconsidered through a more utilitarian lens. Olive and black exteriors were contrasted by unexpected sky-blue interiors, maintaining an element of RÆBURN playfulness within an otherwise highly functional system.

The project focuused on a shared territory between protection, performance and precision.

FUTURE HERITAGE

The partnership continued for Spring/Summer 2013 under the title Future Heritage.

The second collection pushed the language further, combining heritage references and established outerwear archetypes with more progressive materials, colour and construction.

Stone-grey windbreakers incorporated laser-cut hood details revealing fluorescent orange beneath; lightweight forest-green parkas introduced adjustable drawcord systems; and light khaki camouflage puffers continued the focus on functional pocketing and utility.

Contemporary coverage described the collection as bringing RÆBURN’s sportswear sensibility into Moncler through slim, layered and highly textured outerwear, reinforcing the sense that the project was a genuine exchange of design philosophies.

THE RÆBURN ROLE

The Moncler partnership demonstrates an important RÆBURN capability: translating specialist research into a new brand context.

Rather than using military references superficially, Christopher worked from the logic embedded within original garments — understanding why pockets, seams, materials and constructions existed, then reinterpreting those principles through contemporary product.

That archive intelligence was combined with creative direction, collection design and material development, creating a new outerwear language that felt recognisably Moncler while carrying a distinct RÆBURN point of view.

For the ÆGENCY, it remains a useful model: begin with deep research, and translate that research into functional items that resonate for a totally new audience - and we didn't forget to have a little along the way; each outerwear piece came with an iconic Moncler duck mascot which had been developed through the RÆBURN Studio.

AN EARLY COLLABORATIVE MODEL

Seen in retrospect, Moncler R also occupies an interesting place in Moncler’s wider creative evolution.

Years before the launch of Moncler Genius in 2018, Moncler was already inviting distinctive designers to interpret the house through their own creative perspectives. Moncler later described Genius as an amplification of this longer-standing approach — “one house, different voices”, with individual designers bringing their own point of view while remaining connected to the brand’s DNA.

The two RÆBURN collections sit within that earlier period of experimentation.

They demonstrated the potential of bringing an independent creative voice into an established global outerwear house — not to redesign the brand wholesale, but to create new energy through a genuinely different way of thinking.

THE OUTCOME

Across two seasons, Moncler R brought together Moncler’s authority in technical luxury outerwear with RÆBURN’s expertise in utility, archive research and functional innovation.

The partnership moved from a 20-piece Autumn/Winter collection into the more progressive Future Heritage proposition for Spring/Summer 2013, proving that the creative territory had sufficient depth to evolve rather than simply repeat.

For RÆBURN, the collaboration was an important early demonstration of how specialist knowledge can create value inside a globally recognised brand.
