We're looking for an experienced freelance machinist to join the RÆBURN studio on a flexible, part-time basis. You'll work closely with Christopher and the team across RÆMADE projects, prototypes, samples, special projects and collaborations, turning ideas and unexpected materials into beautifully made products.

Making has always been fundamental to RÆBURN, and this is an important appointment as we take the studio into its next chapter.

What you'll do

  • Cut and sew RÆMADE pieces, prototypes and samples in the studio
  • Work alongside Christopher and the team on special projects and collaborations
  • Take unexpected materials and work out the best way to construct with them
  • Solve making problems as they come up, experimenting until there is a way forward
  • Bring your own experience and ideas to what we make and how we make it

Essential

  • Three to five years' professional experience as a machinist
  • Excellent technical sewing and garment-construction skills
  • Confident on industrial machinery across a wide range of materials
  • Strong cutting skills
  • Able to read and interpret patterns with confidence
  • Curious, resourceful and solutions-focused
  • Able to work independently in a small, collaborative studio
  • Comfortable with a freelance rhythm, with flexibility to add days when a project needs them

Desirable

  • Experience with technical, outerwear or performance fabrics
  • Experience of working with reclaimed or surplus materials
  • Sampling or prototype experience in a design studio

More about the role

You'll be joining a small, collaborative studio where design and making happen side by side. We want someone who becomes a key part of the RÆBURN team: bringing technical expertise, creative thinking and practical problem-solving, and helping us develop what we make, how we make it and what comes next.

Days follow the projects in the studio, so the number will rise and fall across the year.

If we would like to know more, the first step is a short call of about 20 minutes. After that we invite you to the studio in Greenwich to meet Christopher and the team, and to see where the work is made.

QUESTIONS

Is there a closing date?

Each role shows its closing date among the key facts. Where none is shown, the role stays open until it is filled and we read applications as they arrive, so it is worth applying early.

Do I need a portfolio?

Each role lists what to send. For design, making and other creative roles we ask for examples of your work. A link or a single PDF is best: choose a few pieces that show how you think and make, not everything you have done.

Can I visit the studio before I apply?

You are welcome to. Our regular RÆBURN Studio Tours are open to everyone and are a good way to see the studio and the archive. Dates are on the Events page. Coming on a tour is not part of the process and has no bearing on an application.

Do I need the right to work in the UK?

Yes. You need the right to work in the UK for any role with us, and we will ask to see proof before you start. We are not in a position to sponsor visas.

How do freelance roles work?

Freelance roles are self-employed. You invoice us for the days you work, at a rate agreed before you start, and days are booked with you ahead of each project.

Do you work with recruitment agencies?

No. We recruit directly and do not accept introductions from agencies.

INTERNSHIPS

We've always valued the energy, curiosity and new perspectives that interns have brought to RÆBURN over the years. However, as a small and focused studio, we're currently unable to offer internships for the foreseeable future.

We know this may be disappointing, particularly for those hoping to learn more about RÆBURN first-hand, so we'd encourage you to explore some of the other ways we've created to open up our thinking, processes and experience.
