Space Shapes Behaviour
Our studio at Design District is built to be reconfigured: a place for making, a working archive and an open door, shaped by the work rather than fixed around it.
A STUDIO DESIGNED TO EVOLVE
When we moved RÆBURN to Building A3 at Design District, Greenwich Peninsula, we were looking for more than a new address. After years of change and experimentation, the move offered an opportunity to recalibrate; to create a more considered environment around the way we wanted to work next. Smaller, more focused and more adaptable, the ambition was to build a studio around clarity, collaboration and long-term thinking.
Designed by Adam Khan Architects, Building A3 provided the framework. The architecture is calm and purposeful, defined by concrete, generous natural light and carefully considered proportions. The space creates room for activity to change; from quiet research and design to making, meetings, presentations and larger moments of collaboration. That flexibility was one of the qualities that originally drew us here, and it has become one of the things we value most.
A STUDIO IN CONSTANT MOTION
We've allowed the space to evolve around the way we actually work. Vitsœ 606 shelving, modular storage, worktables, rails and mobile elements create an adaptable system that can continually be reconfigured. Nothing needs to remain fixed. A workspace can become a presentation space; a meeting can become a workshop; products and materials can move from storage into research, display or making. In many ways, the studio operates like the RÆBURN design process itself; modular, resourceful and continually open to reconsideration.
At the heart of the space is the RÆBURN archive. Almost two decades of garments, materials, prototypes, military artefacts, collaborations and experiments sit alongside the work happening today. The archive is treated as a working resource. A parachute, life raft, garment or prototype can be easily examined and used to provoke the next conversation. Past, present and future exist alongside one another, allowing previous learning to become the starting point for new ideas.
MADE TO BE USED
Crucially, this remains a place for making. Design, development, research and hands-on experimentation happen within the same environment; keeping materials and process close. It is also increasingly a place for exchange. Through our Studio Tours, workshops, talks, meetings and collaborations, we've been able to open the doors to students, designers, businesses, partners and the wider public - sharing not only finished outcomes, but the thinking and processes behind them.
That sense of exchange extends beyond our own walls. Design District brings together a diverse community of creative businesses and disciplines within one neighbourhood, each with its own identity but connected through proximity. It reinforces something we've long believed at RÆBURN: the most interesting ideas rarely develop in isolation. They emerge through conversation, unexpected connections and the willingness to share knowledge, challenge assumptions and make things together.
Our experience at Building A3 has only reinforced the thinking that brought us here. The studio has continued to adapt as we've settled into it; shaped by the work we make, the archive we draw from, the people we welcome and the ideas we explore together. Perhaps most importantly, it doesn't feel finished. Like RÆBURN itself, it is designed to keep changing, responding and moving forward.
A place to think, make, share, question and collaborate; always evolving, and always open to what comes next.
